While some artists in the music industry have accused DJ Maphorisa of being a gatekeeper, Soa Mattrix sings a different tune about the DJ and producer.

When he rose to stardom through his hit single Uthando in 2020, Mandla "Soa Mattrix" Mashakeni said his schedule was tight with many opportunities coming his way until he stopped getting bookings for five months.

"When an artist releases a song and it becomes big, you start gigging and all of that — then once the hype goes, you get frustrated. At that time I didn't know much about marketing and content creation," he told TshisaLIVE.

"Sometimes things happen in this industry that make other people want to give up on being consistent musicians. Most of those things are not there for people to know and they are hidden."

Soa Mattrix said he stayed with Maphorisa for months and learnt how to navigate the industry.

"He called me to talk before we worked on music. He introduced me to a lot of people, a lot of promoters and I started getting bookings. What I've learnt from him is the power of collaboration. I wasn't a person who did a lot of collaborations but he made me understand you learn a lot. And the business side of things as well."

He is confident he is an artist set to be in high demand after the release of his album Akani, which translates to "build together".

He has collaborated with exceptional vocalists, including Murumba Pitch, Sipho Magudulela and Cnethemba Gonelo, conveying a message about life's intricacies, love's depths, spirituality's essence and the profound resonance of ancestral ties.

"I'm one artist who has faced a lot in life. I want people to know that and be motivated and inspired by the project to do more.

"This is basically me trying to be different from everyone and try something new. Give people what they have never heard before — or at least what they have not heard in amapiano.

"There are people who are facing a lot in life. I'm trying to motivate them more in whatever they are doing."
